About this Course

The Employment Act is the basic labour law governing employment relations in Singapore. It provides the terms and conditions of employment and the rights and obligations of employers and employees. It also instils labour discipline on employers in implementing the minimum employment conditions and statutory benefits provided for all employees. In maintaining good employment relationship with employees, HR practitioners and Non-HR Management personnel, including supervisors, line-managers and executives should have a good understanding and appreciation of the Employment Act.

This 2-day seminar aims to give participants a sound understanding of the concepts, rationale behind the Employment Act and the practical application of the norms in their establishments. More importantly, it attempts to answer some of the questions managers, executives and supervisors ask themselves, such as:

a. "The employee accepted the appointment and commenced work, but he refused to sign the employment contract. Can I terminate his service?"

b. "I approved the leave of my employee. A few days later, while on leave the employee tendered his resignation. Can I refuse to consider his resignation? Can I revoke the approved annual leave?"

c. "I made my employee to continue with 2 hours of equipment training following his shift work. The employee, insist that I sign the OT form. Can I refuse to grant OT?"

The seminar will also cover on the latest amendments to the Employment Act (w.e.f. 1 April 2014) and how will it impact companies.

Objectives

In this two-day seminar, participants will be able to have good understanding of the various provisions of the Employment Act and its applications in day-to-day dealings at the workplace.

At the end of the seminar, participants will be able to answer some typical questions such as:

  1. What are the key differences between a contract for service and contract of service?
  2. What to include in the employment contract?
  3. What are the key criteria to determine managerial, executive and confidential position?
  4. What is the difference between termination and dismissal?
  5. How to apply the norms for computing the salary and various benefits for full-time and part-time employment?
  6. What is the recourse for company to deal with an employee who is frequently late, absent or on sick leave?
  7. Can annual leave be used to off set notice pay?
  8. What is the probationary period and is the employee entitled for annual leave if the probationary period is extended to 6 months?
  9. Can employer terminate an employee before or during an employee's maternity leave?
