About this Course

Course Overview

The Certificate in English Language comprises of three levels - Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced, which is offered to non-native English speakers. Overall, the programme has three focus areas:

• Improving the student's English language proficiency through listening, discussion, active participation and group work.
  
• Fostering a greater understanding of the local culture and the confidence to communicate effectively in this context.
  
• Developing skills that will enable him/her to advance in the next level of academic learning
  

Learning Outcomes

At the end of each level students should be able to achieve the following:

Elementary level

• Understand simple sentences and frequently used expressions.
  
• Read to understand and obtain information from short documents, signs and symbols.
  
• Write a simple text on familiar topics.
  
• Cope with everyday situations in an English-speaking environment.
  

Intermediate level

• Understand sentences and frequently used expressions during conversations/discussions.
  
• Read, understand and obtain information from short documents, familiar sources, signs and symbols.
  
• Engage in "informal writing" such as blogs, notebook entries or free writing.
  

Advanced level

• Convey information, feelings and opinions on familiar topics, using appropriate formality
  
• Engage in discussion in a familiar situation making relevant points and responding to reach a shared understanding.
  
• Engage in formal writing or produce a simple connected text for an intended audience.
  

Entry Requirements

Elementary level

Completed Secondary 1 English Language or Equivalent

Intermediate level

Completed the Certificate in English Language - Elementary or its equivalent in English language

Advanced level

Complete the Certificate in English Language - Intermediate or its equivalent in English Language

In addition to the above, all students must be at least 14 years of age.

Assessment

Students will be assessed based on written exams, assignments and/or projects.

Duration

Each level comprises of 180 hours conducted over 3 months full-time.

Requirement for Graduation

Students are required to complete of all tests and coursework, as well as achieve a minimum pass overall for the course.

Award

Students who successfully complete all modules will be awarded Certificate in English Language - Elementary / Intermediate / Advanced by Asian International College.
