Certificate in Early Years Theory and Practice (Semester 2) Module Synopsis The Developing Child (II) This module covers a wide range of theories, perspectives, and practices on the social-emotional development of children. Basic human emotions such as fear, anger, sadness, love and attachment, joy and happiness and how they evolve, will be covered. Special attention will be given to the practical implications of the related behavioural and emotional problems often found among young children. Language and Literacy This module introduces participants to the various theories of children’s language and literacy development. Participants will also learn the importance of preparation and organisation of a literacy-rich environment that helps facilitate language development in young children. Making choice of children’s literature and the technique of using these materials will be included. The Early Educator as a Professional This module explores the multiple roles of teachers in working with children, families, other professionals and agencies in the community. A range of professional issues will be examined, including roles of the practitioner, the stages of professional development, ethics and code of conduct, self evaluation, reflective practice, continuing education and advocacy. This module will also develop participants’ speech and presentation skills, written communication competencies and knowledge of technology for teaching and learning. Practicum (I) This module extends participants’ competence in relation to practical aspects of working with young children in early childhood settings. The practicum supports participants’ learning in the area of physical and cognitive development of children, professional practices, issues related to safety, health, hygiene and nutrition and the learning environment. Participants will be involved in daily routines of the school and engage in reflective writing
