Post-Diploma Certificate in Curriculum Design (Semester 1) Module Synopsis Professional Development for Leaders This module aims to enhance participants’ professional knowledge and skills for their work with young children in the classroom, as well as to prepare them for the roles of leaders, managers and administrators. Research, current issues and discourse surrounding classroom practices and policies will be introduced. Assessment tools for programmes and modes of documentations will prepare participants for their leadership roles in curriculum design and planning. Participants will also explore continuous professional development opportunities and plan for personal growth and career pathways. Developmentally Appropriate Learning Environments This module focuses on the learning environments for pre-kindergarten in contrast with the older preschool children. The pre-K period is to be viewed as unique as it provides a significant foundation upon which the early childhood years are formed and nurtured. Participants will examine the human, social environment in partnership with the physical environment to facilitate developmentally appropriate practices and experiences for pre-K children. Play as a medium of learning will be revisited with emphasis on discovery in a safe and nurturing environment and exploration of sensory rich materials. Scheduling of the child’s day, routines and transitions will be examined as part of the rich learning opportunities for pre-Kindergarten children. Leadership in Curriculum Design This module will help the participant to view curriculum design from a leader’s perspective. Participants will experience the integration of their prior learning on play, observation and assessment, and reflective practices in relation to developmental milestones and inclusion of children with diverse needs. Participants will utilise a planning and teaching cycle to bring together the different elements of curriculum design and explore contemporary issues to enrich the programme as well as to infuse co-construction of knowledge in the early childhood classrooms. The areas for change in the early childhood classroom will also be explored.
