About this Course

The Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) Qualification is suitable for anyone who wants a solid foundation of knowledge in finance and accounting. It will provide students with all the technical skills and knowledge they need to perform an accounting-support role and work at a technician level. The qualification is part of the Foundations in Accountancy suite of awards.

After completing the CAT Qualification, students can continue their studies with the ACCA Qualification and work towards becoming a qualified chartered certified accountant.  Students will be given exemption from the first 3 exams of the ACCA Qualification (Fundamental 1, Fundamental 2, and Fundamental 3) and the 1 year’s practical experience can count towards the 3 years of practical experience needed for the ACCA Qualification.

  • Minimum 16 years old plus
  • IELTS 4.5 or pass in English language at GCE ‘N’ level or its equivalent
  • No other academic requirement

What’s Involved

To achieve the CAT Qualification, students will need to register as a student on Foundations in Accountancy and complete the following:

Seven (7) Exams:

  • Recording Financial Transactions (FA1)
  • Management Information (MA1)
  • Maintaining Financial Records (FA2)
  • Managing Costs and Finances (MA2)
  • Accountant in Business (FAB)
  • Management Accounting (FMA)
  • Financial Accounting (FFA)

Plus two (2) of the following Options papers:

  • Foundations in Taxation (FTX)
  • Foundations in Financial Management (FFM)
  • Foundations in Audit (FAU)
  • Foundations in Professionalism

One year of practical experience in any accounting environment

Students will be awarded the Introductory Certificate in Financial and Management Accounting   when they have completed exams FA1 and MA1; the Intermediate Certificate in Financial and Management Accounting when they have completed exams FA2 and MA2; and the Diploma in Accounting and Business when they have completed exams FAB, FMA and FFA.  Students will receive these awards only when they have also completed Foundations in Professionalism.

It is important to note that exams FAB, FMA and FFA within Foundations in Accountancy are exactly the same as exams Fundamental 1, Fundamental 2 and Fundamental 3 of the ACCA Qualification and share identical syllabuses, study guides and assessment methods. 

Certificates in Audit, Tax and Financial Management

It is possible for students to sit the Options papers in audit, tax and financial management as individual awards.  Certificates will be awarded on the successful completion of the option paper and Foundations in Professionalism.

Foundations in Professionalism

Foundations in Professionalism is an online, interactive module designed to help students develop their understanding of what it means to act professionally and ethically in the work they carry out.

Completion of Foundations in Professionalism is compulsory for students who wish to be awarded the Introductory and Intermediate certificates in Financial and Management Accounting, the Diploma in Accounting and Business and the CAT Qualification.

Please note Foundations in Professionalism only needs to be completed once by students who choose to complete one or more of these awards.  It is free of charge and can be accessed from the ACCA website.

Foundations in Professionalism will not contribute towards the Professional Ethics module which is part of the ACCA Qualification as they are distinct and separate modules.

Exemptions

Students with relevant qualifications from a recognised institution may be eligible to claim exemption from papers within Foundations in Accountancy.  Students who choose to complete the CAT Qualification may be eligible to claim exemptions from some or all of the papers within the Introductory Certificate in Financial and Management Accounting and Intermediate Certificate in Financial and Management Accounting based on relevant practical experience.
