About this Course

The Foundation Course in English is a 3-month foundational English programme that focuses on developing students’ proficiency level in the English language for general, everyday use.

This course is for students who desire a well-rounded blend of general, academic and professional English and is a stepping stone for those who wish to further their studies or work in an English-speaking environment.

The course encompasses the study of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, as well as grammar and vocabulary. It aims to place students at an adequate proficiency threshold to begin receiving instruction in more complex language skills (i.e. Business and Academic English skills). Its main objective is to develop students’ confidence in using the target language for daily communication and academic work.

The Foundation Course in English aims to help students acquire English language skills in preparation for a tertiary education in the English medium. It offers students a solid foundation in the four main areas of reading, writing, speaking and listening. At the end of the programme, students will have the confidence and expertise needed to excel in an English speaking environment.

Designed for students who want to learn English in Singapore, regardless of their current language level.

COURSE ASSESSMENT

Student will be assessed through formative and summative assessments. These will include assessment on reading, writing, listening and speaking relevant to the level of study.

The types of assessments students will complete during the course may include tests, reports, proposals, giving presentations, leading and participating in group discussions, group projects, listening and note taking and reading tasks.

Students who have completed the Foundation Course in English can choose to move on to study the Preparatory Course in English (Intermediate Level) to improve on their English proficiency.

CERTIFICATE AWARDED

Students will attain Certificate of Achievement awarded by London School of Business & Finance upon completion of the course.

COURSE DURATION

Full time – 3 months 

Mon – Fri, 5 hours per day

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS 

• At least 16 years old
  
• Local (Singaporean) and international students must have completed 9 years of formal education to be eligible for admission.
  
• Students must sit for a placement test to ascertain their proficiency levels before admittance into the course.
  

Placement Test

A placement test is administered at the Admissions Office upon the students’ arrival in Singapore. Students will be informed of the respective levels they qualify.

Minimum Language Requirement

IELTS 1.0 - <3.0 or,

TOEFL IBT below 30 or,

English Placement Test Score < 4
