About this Course

Objectives

To provide students with a foundation in the field of psychology

  • Equip students with the necessary knowledge and skills to progress to the diploma level
  • Introduce the basic communications skills in psychology, self and personality development and human conduct
  • Touches on the basis elements of psychology thus making the students ready for a smooth progression to the next level of studies

Communication in Psychology

In this module, students will learn the foundation level of interpersonal communication designed for general education and introduced to fundamental concepts in psychology and behavioural science, as related to the practice of communication.

Self and Personality Development

This module is designed to increase student’s success in school, at work and in personal life. It focuses on enabling students to achieve realistic view of themselves, set and pursue meaningful goals, and develop positive personal qualities such as self-esteem, a positive attitude, self-discipline, and self-motivation. The module will also help students adjust to transitions such as progressing from foundation certificate to the diploma level.

Motivation and Behaviour

The module covers the principal theories of motivation with the examination of needs, cognition, and social aspects. It also includes a critical review of research and application of these theories to human behaviour. Students will be able to describe, discuss, implement and appraise the major theories of motivation. In addition, students will be able to identify the major causal indicators known to affect emotion/mood.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must be of age 16 and above and meet at least one of the following requirements:

3 GCE 'O' Level credits

    OR

Full GCE 'N' Level with grade 1-5 in English

    OR

ITE NITEC, COS and NTC holder

    OR

Other applications can be considered on a case-by-case basis

Additional Criteria:

Those without a C6 credit in English (EL1) at GCE 'O' Level or Grade 1-5 in English at GCE 'N' Level will be required to:

  • Achieve a minimum of band 5.5 (with no sub-band less than 5.0) in IELTS (International English Language Testing System); or
  • Score a minimum of 196 points (computer-based), 69-70 points (internet-based) or 525 points (paper-based) in TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language); or
  • Applicants may be exempted from IELTS if they have completed at least two years and graduated from a government accredited high school where English is the primary language of instruction. A letter of verification from the school is required for admission consideration.
