About this Course

This course is accredited by the Australian Counselling Association (ACA) in Australia and in Singapore by the Singapore Association for Counselling (SAC), giving graduates the ability to pursue careers in both countries as well as internationally.

This course embodies work skills to help students fulfil their professional and personal aspirations.

Subjects

Course Structure

12 week trimesters / 3 trimesters per year (up to 4 subjects per trimester)

Course Requirements

12 subjects successfully completed to earn 36 credit points.

  • Each 3 credit point subject requires a minimum of 130 hours of study per trimester including one 25-hour intensive contact block
  • Practicum consists of 130 hours of practice (100 hours minimum face to face counselling)over a period of 2 trimesters.
  • Practicum placement assistance is provided by the University

Study Program

Students are required to complete 12 subjects (36 credit points) based on availability and scheduling.

  • Reflective Practice in Guidance & Counselling
  • Practicum in Guidance and Counselling

4 subjects (12 credit points) from the Master of Education offerings

(Students may also choose to study one subject from the Business or IT disciplines in place of a Master of Education subject.)

Entry Requirements

  • Completion of an appropriate three-year undergraduate degree from this or another university
  • Entry requirements for this course are consistent with the Pathways to Qualifications in the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF level 9) Guidelines for Masters degrees. 

English Language Requirements for All Students

  • IELTS 6.5 (no component lower than 6.0)/TOEFL iBT 90 (with minimum writing score of 21) and above; or
  • Satisfactory completion of JCU Singapore English Language Preparatory Program (ELPP).
  • Students who have successfully completed 2 years of full-time study in English medium may satisfy the English language requirement on a case-by-case basis.

Advanced Standing

Students may be granted advanced standing if, in addition to meeting the entry requirements, they have a minimum of two years full time relevant working experience.

Application Procedures

This program is designed for Singapore citizens, Singapore PR or Dependant Pass holders.

Attendance Requirements

Domestic students must attend at least 75% of the scheduled lecture and tutorial activities to be eligible for assessment.

Career Outcome

The Master and Guidance Counselling degree equips graduates with the skills, confidence and knowledge to become a professional counsellor in a variety of locations and settings.
