About this Course

The Master of Education is a postgraduate course consisting of 36 credit points. Students complete core studies that include a research project and a major in a chosen area. The course provides students with extended knowledge and skills in Education.

The Master of Education provides both teachers and graduates from non-teaching backgrounds with the opportunity to further their qualifications for professional development. This course does not lead to teacher registration.

Subjects

Students are required to complete 12 subjects (36 credit points) based on availability and scheduling:

4 Core Subjects (12 credit points)

  • Educational Leadership
  • Education for Sustainability
  • Individual Researched Action Project
  • Introduction to Educational Research or Contemporary Curriculum*

*This subject may be substituted only if Introduction to Educational Research has been completed prior to admission.

+ 4 Major Subjects (12 credit points)

Leadership and Management Major

Plus three of the following subjects available:

  • Communicating Sustainability and Climate Change
  • Corporate Responsibility and Governance

Course Requirements

Each 3-credit-point subject requires a minimum of 130 hours of study time per trimester including one 25-hour intensive contact block.

Entry Requirements

  • Successful completion of a recognised, cognate four-year undergraduate degree
  • For applicants with a non-cognate degree, appropriate work experience with a minimum 2 years working as a professional educator in a management, leadership or supervisory position can be considered on a case-by-case basis
  • Entry requirements of this course are consistent with the Pathways to Qualification in the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF level 9) Guidelines for Masters degree. 

English Requirements

  • IELTS 6.5 (no component lower than 6.0) / TOEFL iBT 90 (with minimum writing score of 21) and above; or
  • Satisfactory completion of JCU Singapore English Language Preparatory Program Level 4
  • Students who have successfully completed 2 years of full time study in English medium may satisfy the English language requirement on a case-by-case basis

Advanced Standing

Students may apply for exemption for previous tertiary study where appropriate in accordance with the Advanced Standing and Articulation policy and associated procedures. Advanced standing will be granted only for studies completed in the 10 years prior to the commencement of this course.

Attendance Requirements

Domestic students must attend at least 75% of the scheduled lecture and tutorial activities to be eligible for assessment.

Career Outcome

This course does not lead to teacher registration but teachers will be able to draw on the extended knowledge and skills offered in the course to further their careers by taking on leadership and management roles.

The course will advance graduates professionally through a range of learning and research outcomes. These include (but are not limited to) advanced knowledge of recent developments, discourses and debates in the field of Education and/or associated area of professional practice, together with research skills, advanced speaking, reading, writing, listening, collaborating and advocacy skills. Such skills are readily transferable across a diverse range of leadership and management settings.
