About this Course

Objectives

The Diploma in Counselling has been specially designed to:

  • Equip students with relevant set of knowledge and skills required in the field of counselling and to prepare them to embark on a counselling degree programme.
  • Focus mainly in the theories and practice of counselling with handling specific issues including crisis intervention and grievance, children, youth and cross-cultural counselling, family and relationship counselling, counselling for substance misuse, career counselling and Gerontological counselling.
  • Provide students an avenue to conduct practical application of the learned theories and skills in counselling through role plays, case study and case presentation, term paper and industry visits and industry talks.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must be of age 17 and above and meet at least one of the following requirements:

Partial GCE 'A' level, 

     OR

5 GCE ‘O’ Level credits, 

    OR

Professional Certificate in Psychology from MDIS or other recognised local/overseas polytechnics or professional institutes, 

   OR

ITE Higher NITEC,CBS and ITC holder, 

  OR

Other applications can be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Additional Criteria:

All applicants must also possess a C6 credit in English Language (EL1) at GCE ‘O’ Level. Applicants who do not meet the English requirement are required to:

  • Achieve a minimum of band 5.5 (with no sub-band less than 5.0) in IELTS (International English Language Testing System); or
  • Score a minimum of 196 points (computer-based), 69-70 points (internet-based) or 525 points (paper-based) in TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language); or
  • Applicants may be exempted from IELTS if they have completed at least two years and graduated from a government accredited high school where English is the primary language of instruction. A letter of verification from the school is required for admission consideration.
