About this Course

The course is designed for homeowners, property owners and individuals who want to pursue their interests in interior design, and for the general public to understand the aspects and language of interior design. The course will also be able to equip one with the necessary skills to put into paper their own design ideas, while being able to communicate and manage their contractors effectively.

The course will be divided into three parts to effectively fast-track participants into the design and technical aspects of interior design:

Part 1: Understanding the language and aspects of design

Participants will be introduced to various aspects of design: visual language of design, interior scale & proportion, the use of colours and various styles of interiors.  At the end of this part of the course, participants will be able to understand how the various aspects of design are translated into layout plans, detail drawings and perspectives.  Participants will effectively be able to read and understand a designer’s drawings and plans.

Part 2: Conveying your own design intention

In Part 2, participants will be introduced to the basic tools of creating your own layout plans and mood boards, taking the first step to be your own designer for your property!  Whether you are creating your own design or specifying the design ideals to your designer, participants will learn how to communicate the ideas effectively, this will ensure that the ideas are conveyed accurately and avoid miscommunication.

Part 3: Managing the construction process

Participants will be introduced to the technical aspects of materials selections and specification, types of interior furnishings, aspects of lighting and air-conditioning in an easy to understand way.  This will ensure that participants know what are being built and supplied to the construction project.  Participants will also learn what quality of workmanship is acceptable and what is not and lastly, be introduced to the process and timeline of construction so as to effectively co-manage the construction process.

Aim of the Course

This course will help participants to be a well-informed and knowledgeable home /property owner, who will not only be able to achieve the desired outcomes for their properties, it will also save time, money and hassle, and also avoid miscommunication in a construction project.

Learning Objectives

Participants who have successfully completed this program will be able to:

  1. For Homeowners/property owners – be an informed Client; know your designers’ language and be able to specify your design intentions that in order to achieve your dream home/property, and also ensuring you get what you are paying for. Homeowners can also be your own interior designers, eliminating the hassle of making your designer understand your mind and create your own designs instead.
  2. For individuals who have an interest in interior design and looking for a career switch – the course serves as an introductory course to the professional world of Interior design.  Participants will be able to understanding the design and technical aspects of interior design and have a first hand experience of interior design, and in the process evaluate the possibilities and skills needed to purse the new career.
