About this Course

The Master of Science in Computing and Information Systems programme is designed for people who have little or no previous experience of computing or information technology. However, you may have some related experience or skills that you wish to build upon. Emphasis is placed on the effective use, design and development of software for information systems. It is ideal training for those who plan to move into the computing and information systems field, or where computing plays an increasing part in a particular role.

Graduates will have relevant, up-to-date knowledge, coupled with the professional and technical skills needed to develop, manage and employ information systems applications in a range of organisations. They will become skilled in programming and learn how to design and implement information systems. To enhance employability, the skills and knowledge gained on the course are directly relevant to industry.

The programme aims:

  • to develop a systematic understanding of knowledge, tools and techniques at the forefront of the discipline and a critical awareness of trends and developments relevant to the field of study
  • to develop an awareness of relevant professional practice, and related legal, social and ethical issues
  • to develop an understanding of ICT knowledge, tools and techniques with special reference to the effective use, design and development of software for ICT systems and applications
  • to develop an ability to analyse, design and implement ICT systems and utilize ICT applications

Module Descriptions

MSc Project  (60 credits)

To provide the opportunity for students to demonstrate independent thinking in the application of their computing, award and research skills to a complex problem. To further develop the student's investigative, research, writing and presentation skills. To provide an opportunity for the student to investigate a topical, award relevant issue of their choice in some depth.

Independent Study  (20 credits)

To provide the opportunity for students to acquire an in depth understanding of a selected award specific topic through independent study. To reinforce project management, peer review, self-reflection and professional skills.

Principles of Computing   (20 credits)

To provide a fundamental understanding of the principles and practices associated with ICT technology, computer programming and Multimedia and Web-based systems and their respective roles in ICT application development and usage

Software Development   (20 credits)

To use an object oriented programming language to develop applications and enable critical appraisal of the object-oriented approach to software development.

ICT Systems Development **  (20 credits)

To enable students to apply structured and object-oriented methodologies to the analysis and design of software applications. To expose students to current and developing data models and database systems, to enable them to apply related concepts to conventional and advanced database systems applications.

Security Management**  (20 credits)

To provide knowledge of the tools and techniques available to secure and manage, an information system in a meaningful manner.

To develop students ability to manage the security of an information system at a strategic, tactical and operational level.

Project Management and Research Methodology**  (20 credits)

To enable students to use project management techniques and tools and partake in various research methods. In addition, students will understand the role of professional and ethical decison-making in the computer industry.

** Modules will be offered in block teaching mode and conducted by USW academic staff. For modules with Block Teaching, the faculty lecturers will only cover partial (28 hours) of the module.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must be of age 21 and above, and at least a Lower Second Class Honours degree or equivalent.

This programme is suitable for non-IT related degree holders.
