About this Course

The Diploma in Business Management is designed to impart comprehensive managerial skills and knowledge to participants and equip them with an understanding of business operations in a changing business environment

The programme is designed for individuals who have assumed or will assume middle management status, and wish to obtain formal training in Business Management for further advancement in their career and academic pursuits

Principles of Business Management (II)

This module will provide a concise coverage of current management concepts and processes, so as to enable students to apply their knowledge to specific organisational situations more effectively.

The course contents include: Nature of management; Development of management thought and practice; The business environment; Corporate strategy and planning; Organising and time management; Group problem – solving and decision making; The control system of organisation; Organisational structure; The structure of organisation; Delegation, authority and responsibility; Leadership qualities of a manager; The communication process.

Business Accounting and Finance

This course is designed to provide the fundamental concepts in business accounting and financial management and the importance of the need, sources and uses of funds. The students are expected to apply the analytical techniques learnt in main areas of costing and financial decision making, i.e. financial statement analysis, budgetary planning and control, capital budgeting, product costing and short term cost-volume-profit relationship.

The course contents include: Introduction to managerial finance; Financial planning and Capital budgeting; Corporate reports; Profit determination; Financial statement analysis; Time value of money; Financial forecasting, Planning and budgeting; Cash flow budgeting and cost build-up; Costing systems and records; Marginal costing and Break-even analysis.

Principles of Marketing and Production Management

The module will provide participants with a good knowledge of the basic principles of marketing and a sound grasp of the marketing concept and its application. To assist in dealing with the problems involved in production and operations management (POM) by focusing on its concepts, ideas and analytical tools involved. The course contents include: The Marketing concept; Marketing research; Segmentation; Consumer behaviour; Product planning, Branding and packaging; Pricing decisions; Distribution, wholesaling and retailing; Promotion mix; Marketing planning and management; Introduction to POM; Work design and measurement; Operations planning and scheduling; Resource allocation and reliability analysis; Operations control and quality control; Maintenance strategies and cost control.

Organisational Behaviour

This module will assist participants in the understanding of the various behavioural and Human Resource Management issues in an organisation and translating the concepts into real life applications. The course contents include: Behaviour and human resource in the organisation; Personality and perceptions; Motivation and job satisfaction; Leadership and group behaviour; Staffing and human resource planning; Performance appraisal and compensation; Training-management relations; Labour-management relations; Power, Politics and organisation culture; Organisation change and development.

Principles of Economics

This module will provide a basic understanding of the economy, show how all economic activities are interrelated, and give a clear understanding of the principle underlying the current business situation. The course contents include: Introduction to economics concepts; The Market – Demand and Supply, Elasticity; Microeconomics – Utility and Demand, Indifference curves and demand; Keynesian economics – Consumption and investment, Government purchases and taxes, The Multiplier; Money – Money creation, The money market and output determination; Macroeconomics – The national economy, Circular flow of economic activity, National product and income, Unemployment and inflation; The factor market; Economic role of government; International trade.

Business Statistics

This module will equip the participants with skills in data processing and application of statistical methods in business forecasting. The course contents include: Statistical presentation; Probability theory; Sampling distribution and confidence interval; Testing hypotheses concerning the value of the population mean; Simple correlation; Regression analysis; Time series analysis; Index numbers.

Business Law

This module will provide the participants with an insight into the laws governing business activities. The course contents include: Introduction to law; Contract law; Sales of goods; The law of negligence in business activities; Consumer protection; Legal framework of business organisations; Law of insolvency; Intellectual property law; Corporate finance and securities regulation; Land law.

Fundamentals of Information Technology

This module will equip students with the fundamental concepts of computer, adequate knowledge of business computing concepts, hardware and software components, and information processing skills. The course contents include: Computing in business; Operating system; Information processing devices; Data communications; Networks; Hardware configurations and software installation; Window-based word processing; MS Windows; Importing and exporting of files; Graphics, Columns and mail merge; Multimedia.

Entry Requirements

Interested applicants must possess ONE of the following entrance requirements:

  • Partial GCE 'A' Levels
    OR
  • Minimum 5 GCE 'O' Level credits
    OR
  • ITE CBS, ITC or Higher NITEC holders
    OR
  • Professional Certificate in Business Management awarded by MDIS or equivalent
    OR
  • Professional Certificate from other recognised local/overseas professional institutes.  Applicants will be considered on a case by case basis
  • Applicants must be of age 16 and above.

Applicants who are unable to meet the minimum admission requirements may enrol for the Diploma in Business Management incorporating Professional Certificate in Business Management.
