About this Course
Certificate in Thermofluid Engineering Module Synopsis Fluid Mechanics The aim of this module is to provide students with an understanding of the fundamental principles of Fluid Mechanics. In this module, the fundamental principles of Fluid Mechanics are introduced under the following topics. These include pressure and pressure measurement, hydrostatic forces on surfaces submerged in fluids and buoyancy, energies of liquids in motion, losses of energy in pipelines, general principles of pumps and system characteristic, and flow measurement (pitot-static tube, venturi and orifice meters). Laboratory experiments are included to reinforce the students' theoretical knowledge through visualisation and experimentation. Thermodynamics An Introduction to Thermodynamics will first be covered to explain the different forms of energy and various processes by which energy is transformed from one form to another. Thereafter, module will focus on applications of basic thermodynamic principles to actual engineering problems. Examples are petrol engines and diesel engines used in cars and trucks, gas turbines in aircrafts and steam turbines in electrical power generation plants. Piping Design This module aims to equip students with the basic knowledge in all major topics to the detailed engineering/layout engineering of piping system, mechanical design, hydraulic design and basic stress analysis of process piping system. The module covers process plant layout, P & ID diagram, design for thermal expansion as well as flexibility analysis of piping system. It is designed for personnel who are involved in the piping system for the oil and gas, power plant, chemical as well as building services industries. It provides the students with practical examples in the materials for construction, piping system specifications, design, installation as well as maintenance of piping system. After attending the course, the students will be able to understand the overview of a process plant system compliance with ASME B31, B16 codes and Singapore Codes of Practice and be able to perform their duties with the piping system more effectively. Instruction including concept theory, problem solving, understanding the codes of practice and standards, system design, drafting as well as piping stress analysis. Laboratory work involves hands-on pump system characteristic and hydraulic losses of piping system will enhances students understanding of the practical aspects of piping system.
