Certificate in Aviation Fundamentals - Part of Diploma in Engineering (Aerospace)

About this Course

Certificate in Aviation Fundamentals Module Synopsis Aerospace Fundamentals The module aims to equip students with an appreciation of the basic aerodynamics and flight principles, the basic aircraft structures, components, systems, their basic design features and the airworthiness legislations requirement for the aviation industry, specifically in Singapore. The topics designed aim to provide students with the foundation that can be built upon at the higher levels for those who desire to pursue the other certificate courses within the Diploma in Engineering (Aerospace). To spur the students’ learning interest and knowledge enhancement, this module will help them through web searching, e-learning assignment, classroom activities, inquiry-based learning tasks and class tests. Flight Mechanics This module aims to provide students with an understanding of the aerodynamics principles of aircraft flight in regime ranging from subsonic to supersonic flow. Topics include basic aerodynamics forces acting on an aircraft, the aerofoil performance at subsonic speed, viscous flow characteristics, aircraft performance characteristics and factors affecting flight, take-off and landing performance, leveled turn, range and endurance, aircraft stability and control. Wind tunnel experiments are designed to reinforce students’ theoretical knowledge. These include varied models simulation in a low speed subsonic wind tunnel. Tutorials are designed with heavy focus on practical problems that involve aerodynamic characteristics and performance of aircraft. Aerospace Maintenance Practices This module aims to equip students with the basic knowledge and practical skills in aerospace manufacturing processes and maintenance practices. The topics include turning, milling, grinding, CNC machining, non-conventional machining, jigs and fixtures, finishing operations, measurements, sheet metal forming, welding, non-destructive test, wire locking, fasteners, assembly and aircraft weight & balancing. Students learn through practical projects, reinforcing the theory covered in lectures with hands-on practice. Safety and a positive work attitude will be emphasized in both theory and practical sessions.
