About this Course

This course is designed to give students an understanding of the biological, social, and cultural factors which influence how humans think, feel, and behave. The Bachelor of Psychology places a strong emphasis on students being actively engaged in current research being conducted in the Department of Psychology. The Department hosts a series of seminars each year that are presented by national and international experts who provide the most current knowledge and research activity in various fields of psychology.

Completion of the Bachelor of Psychology is the first step in undertaking studies to complete a Master of Psychology (Clinical Psychology) or Doctor of Psychology (Clinical).

Course Structure

3 trimesters per year (normally 4 subjects per trimester)

Subject Requirement

24 subjects at Levels 1-3 successfully completed to earn 72 credits PLUS 4 additional subjects at level 4. Academic advice on which subjects to take is available during the admissions process and at the end of every term.

Level 1 - Core Subjects

  • Anthropology: Cultural Diversity in Global Perspective
  • Australian Society: An Introduction to Sociology

PLUS 4 subjects selected from the Master schedule of subjects, which can include those listed below. The Master schedule of subjects is a list of all subjects which can be studied towards an award

  • Introduction to Counselling
  • Multicultural, Child and Adolescent Counselling
  • Effective Writing

Level 2 - Core Subjects

  • Describing and Analysing Behaviour
  • Experimental Investigation and Analysis of Behaviour

PLUS a minimum of 3 subjects from the APAC accredited sequence for the Bachelor of Psychology

Level 3 - Core Subjects

  • Advanced Behavioural Research Design and Analysis

PLUS a minimum of 4 subjects from the APAC accredited sequence for the Bachelor of Psychology

Level 4

Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) 

By invitation to those students who demonstrate high academic performance at Levels 1 - 3

Entry Requirements: Minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 5 (Credit average) across the compulsory Level 2 psychology subjects and a minimum GPA of 6 (Distinction average) across five Level 3 psychology subjects including the Level 3 core subject.

If students do not meet the Honours entry criteria, exit options are as follows:

1. Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) - Exit after Level 3

2. Graduate Diploma of Psychology - Change to Graduate Diploma for level 4 provided the student is able to meet the entry criterion

Entry to the Level 4 program is also available on a case-by-case basis for students who have completed an APAC-accredited three-year undergraduate program in psychology at an external institution.

Entry Requirements

Entry requirements differs from country to country, but in general, applicants must have satisfactorily completed 12 years of schooling or equivalent.

Successful completion of the JCU Singapore Foundation Program will also satisfy the entry requirement.

English Requirements

  • IELTS 6.0 (no component lower than 5.5)/TOEFL iBT 79 (with minimum writing score of 19) and above; or
  • Satisfactory completion of JCU Singapore English Language Preparatory Program (ELPP).
  • Students who have successfully completed 2 years of full-time study in English medium may satisfy the English Language Requirement

Career Outcome

Graduates who have completed the APAC accredited, four-year program can progress to careers as professional psychologists in private practice, government policy development, health and allied health, education, human resource management, research institutions, or the criminal justice system and correctional facilities.

Alternatively, depending on their results, graduates of the four-year program may apply to do a clinical Masters or Doctorate degree or pursue a research degree.

Professional Recognition

Students who complete the four-year Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) accredited sequence in psychology are eligible to apply for conditional registration as psychologists with the Psychologists Board of Australia.
