About this Course

TCP/IP refers to the suite of protocols used by the Internet to govern the transmitting and receiving of messages. TCP/IP is the basic protocols used by most organisational networks. This workshop will provide a broad overview of computer networking and the pre-requisite for more advanced networking workshops.

Objectives

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to;

  • Explain the basic types and components of data communications networks
  • Discuss the importance of network models based on layers and the role of network standards
  • Be familiar with the OSI and TCP/IP standards
  • Understand how the different layers works together
  • Understand the use of the address mask, or prefix length, to determine the number of sub-networks and hosts in a network
  • Understand how messages are routed in a network
  • Differentiate between a logical and physical network device address
