About this Course

The Specialist Diploma in Nursing (Diabetes Management and Education) course has been designed to provide graduates with recognised post-graduate tertiary qualification to assume the role of the Diabetes Educator effectively in the acute and community healthcare setting. Advanced Pathophysiology and Pharmacotherapy in Diabetes (30 hrs) This module provides participants with in-depth knowledge of pathophysiology of diabetes mellitus and pharmaceutical treatment options for diabetes mellitus and other co-morbid conditions. Psychosocial Perspectives in the Management of Diabetes (30 hrs) This module aims to equip participants with an understanding of the psychosocial profile of clients with diabetes. It identifies the psychological implications of diabetes and the social contexts in which the clients cope with the illness and its treatment. Learners will also be equipped with appropriate counseling skills. Basic skills in managing group dynamics will be explored. Case Management (30 hrs) This module introduces the concepts, rationale and framework of case management and the expanded role of diabetes educator as case managers in the community. It will explore strategies available in the community to support care givers and clients. Research and Evidence-Based Practice (45 hrs) The module aims to develop a critical and evaluative approach to research utilising a range of different approaches and methods. It seeks to foster and develop in learners the ability to critically appraise studies as well as to plan a specific piece of research.
