Programme Objectives

Accounting and Finance is central to managing organisations effectively. This course integrates accounting, leadership and change, and gives you a practical insight into developing the discipline.

It also provides you with a firm knowledge of accounting and finance and the adaptability needed in a rapidly changing environment. It is distinctive in its focus on using financial skills in organisations rather than on mathematically modelling financial markets and placing the accounting system in the national and global business environment.

You develop hard and soft accounting skills as well as the interpersonal skills necessary to work effectively in the challenging business environment. The programme is suitable for fully or part-qualified accountants for whom significant exemptions are available.

The overall aims of the programme are to:

  • Provide comprehensive development in the core subjects constitution accounting and finance;
  • Provide the basis on which participants can critically evaluate the role of accounting and finance in the management and development of organisations
  • Identify and evaluate developments in accounting practice
  • Engage in arguments relating to regulation and the development of standards of professional practice.

Module Outline (The MSc Accounting Finance consists of 7 modules plus a Dissertation (total of 180 credits).

Assessment and Graduation

A: Assessment

Formative feedback will be provided in seminars and tutorials in addition to that provided through assignment and guided learning. In-course assignments and oral presentations will be based around essays and reports with presentations providing opportunities for both formative and summative feedback. Formal examinations based around case studies and technical questions where appropriate.

The choice of assessment methods is closely related to the module outcomes. Examinations are used sparingly but are appropriate in topic areas where technical competence must be demonstrated.

B: Graduating Requirements

Students must complete all modules they do not have advanced standing against.

Certification Award

Graduating students will be awarded with an MSc Accounting and Finance degree provided by Teesside University.

Entry Requirement

Admission Requirements (full programme)

  • 20 years old or above
  • Good honours degree (at least a 2:2) in a relevant discipline or
  • A post-experience or professional qualification (includes completion of ACCA F1 to F9)or
  • Equivalent qualifications (including international qualifications)
  • Relevant professional qualification (ACCA, CIMA, ICAEW) will enable students to enter the programme with up to 70 credits advanced standing

Minimum English Language Entry Requirement

  • Achieved a grade C6 or better in English language O level;or
  • Equivalent qualification e.g. IELTS 6.0 (no band below 5.5)

Course Duration

Full Time: 12 Months

Part Time: 20 Months

** ACCA members, who qualified for exemption, will be able to complete the programme within 12 months.

Each semester would be of 13 weeks duration, full-time students would have 3 hours of formal class per day, plus self-study sessions (2 hours per day). Part-time students would have classes 2 evenings a week (3 hours per evening), or alternatively on an intensive weekend basis (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) with 3 sessions per semester.
