About this Course
With increasing diversity in the workplace today resulting from employees of different age, nationalities and cultural backgrounds, organisations face additional challenges in people management. One of the greatest challenges that managers and executives who are accountable for employees have to deal with is to manage workplace grievances and when necessary, enforce discipline.
Workplace grievances may occur as a result of workplace conflicts, confusion over job responsibilities or simply when employees feel they are being unfairly treated. When employee grievances are not identified, handled fairly and expeditiously, workplace morale and employee engagement can be adversely affected.
These factors contribute to low productivity and business issues. Employee counselling is an intervention that can help resolve workplace grievances. However, such effort must be complemented by enforcement of discipline when required. For example, this occurs when counselling does not yield positive and expected results and the employee remains recalcitrant. Counselling and grievance handling must be supported by effective enforcement of workplace discipline. Enforcing discipline requires an understanding of the causes of misconduct, the nature of the misconduct and how disciplinary actions can be taken and managed. Managers and executives who are required to enforce employee discipline must also understand the legal implications of how disciplinary actions, like convening boards of inquiry or handling dismissals.
Effective management of grievances and discipline have other implications for organisations. Under unionised environment, unions must be engaged in handling of grievances and discipline to reinforce harmonious management – union relationship. With increasing popularity of social networking, negative publicity of an organisation in relation to employee management can tarnish the organisation’s image and employer branding. In some cases, unresolved employee grievances or mismanagement of terminations can lead to time consuming and even, expensive litigations.
This course provides knowledge on how to conduct employee counselling and grievance handling. In addition, participants learn the legal implications of disciplinary actions that an organisation may take. The course will provide opportunities for participants to horn these skills through case studies, sharing of experiences and role plays under different scenarios.
