About this Course
Certificate in Materials & Manufacturing Module Synopsis Engineering Materials The primary aim of this module is to provide students with the fundamental knowledge of common engineering materials. The scope covers basic knowledge of metal structures and how they affect the properties and performances of engineering materials. Classroom knowledge is reinforced and enhanced by hands-on experiments in the laboratory on metallography and mechanical testing. Also included in this module are alloying, plain carbon steels, ceramics, non-ferrous materials and the methods to change their properties as well as polymers. Manufacturing Processes This module aims to provide students with the basic knowledge on conventional processes used to support manufacturing industries. It covers principles and application on conventional machining process such as milling, turning, welding, sheet metal forming, as well as injection molding. Advanced Manufacturing Systems & Management This module introduces the students to the fundamental concepts of manufacturing systems, with emphasis on examining the characteristics of different types of production systems. Critical comparisons are made in relation to the advantages and limitations of flow-lines, batch manufacturing and job-shops. Advanced manufacturing technologies and techniques, such as industrial robotics and group technology, are examined to allow students to make informed choice of advanced tools in their future enterprises. The fundamental concept of establishing financial viability and successful employment of various manufacturing strategies is discussed. Students are required to do on-line research on advanced technologies and case studies of highly successful companies.
