About this Course
Certificate in Electrical System Design & Protection Module Synopsis Electrical Circuit Analysis This module introduces students to the concepts and theorems which are needed in the field of electrical engineering technology. The topics include circuit analysis and network theorems, single-phase and three-phase system analysis, power measurement and power factor correction, the a operator and per unit system, harmonics, and transients. The module provides the foundation to equip students in analysing electrical circuits, applying the relevant theories and techniques to solve and troubleshoot circuit problems, and designing electrical systems. Distribution System Design This module focuses on electrical installation design for residential, commercial and industrial premises. On completion of the module, students will be able to understand the elements of the electrical distribution in Singapore and the techniques used in the design. Topics such as sizing of protective devices and cables, design of electrical layout and single-line diagram will be covered. They will also be taught on specific issues such as concept of discrimination in circuit protection, earthing and design requirements of CP5 and good engineering practices. Distribution System Protection This module provides the students with practical knowledge of high voltage (HV) distribution system (up to 22 kV), the electrical equipment used, the protection and safety schemes/devices implemented for the protection of both the equipment and working personnel. Extensive working examples of practical HV distribution equipment such as switchgear, transformer, power cable, protection system and safety earthing practice are included. Fault level calculation (using per unit method) of typical radial network and the protection setting calculation of both DTL and IDMTL over-current and balanced earth-fault protection will be covered. The participants will learn the design of typical HV distribution system, the selection and the testing and commissioning of HV equipment, the calculation of fault level and protection setting to achieve relay co-ordination and discrimination, and the necessary safety procedures and measures required in the operation and maintenance of HV equipment.
