Our Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Quantity Surveying is designed to provide students in Singapore with enhanced technical knowledge and understanding in order to progress their careers, balancing this with the ability to think critically, reason, analyse, research and evaluate, the skills associated with higher education. Thus the programme provides both the life skills and technical knowledge necessary to further pursue a professional career within the realm of Quantity Surveying.

Quantity Surveying is a leading professional role in the built environment, specialising in the cost management and procurement of construction projects. Successful leadership in cost management, right from inception to the completion of building and civil engineering projects requires expertise in managing, constructing, planning, costing, sustaining, valuing, protecting and mediating these environments.

The BSc programme focuses on educating practicing professionals and adding value through detailed analysis and appreciation of professional relationships, costing techniques, build ability, design economics and procurement. This involves the development of problem solving, team collaboration, numeracy and accountability skills to ensure construction projects are delivered to the satisfaction of the client and other construction professionals, and influence a better future in the built environment.

By opting for our Bachelor’s Degree in Quantity Surveying, you can learn how to successfully organise, control and manage the cost associated with building projects. When it comes to construction projects, it is necessary to maximise the value for money, as there has to be strict adherence to the allotted budget and contractual agreements. In addition to this, a quantity surveyor also must be aware of construction technology and legal matters. You will gain a complete understanding of Quantity Surveying in this course, where everything from building economics, contracts, and construction law to construction technology and project management are addressed. By developing core skills, as well as analytical, arithmetic and IT skills, you can look forward to enhancing your development know-how and becoming an efficient team player who knows how to tackle problems and evolve on a continuous basis.

Programme aims:

  • Developing commercial management skills in construction through a theoreticaland practical understanding of the monetary processes of a construction project from the initial brief through to the occupation or lifecycle of the project.
  • An appreciation and understanding of Contract Practice, both in Singapore and internationally, primarily focusing on standard forms of building, civil engineering and operational contracts, their principal procedures, commercial and operational issues in ensuring the successful delivery of a construction project.
  • Develop an understanding of the commercial effect of different technological and environmental services and related disciplines on alternative options for the procurement and commercial management of building and civil engineering construction projects.
  • Understanding the effect of Economics of Design on the cost of various elements of a building and civil engineering project through the application of management and cost analysis techniques.
  • Quantification of construction projects to facilitate confident cost advice, procurement documentation and post contract cost control through the use of industry methods of measurement and general professional practices
  • Combining the commercial management and contract practice skills to successfully procure construction projects and cost manage the process through to completion of the works. 

*Student who have successfully completed and graduated from the above mentioned program with at least 5 years in the execution of construction projects, can apply to BCA as a General Builder GB Class 1 Technical Controller

Programme structure and requirements, levels, modules, credits and awards :

The BSc (Hons) programme is available on a part-time study basis over the course of 15

months. The programme is divided into study units called modules, and these are either

double (30 credits) or single (15 credits). Students complete 120 credits at each of Level

4, Level 5 and Level 6. Each 15 credit module represents150 hours of student learning

and assessment.

DURATION

Part time : 15 months - Twice a week (3 hours per day)

Weekdays : 7pm to 10pm (36 hours per module)

Criteria for admission

Candidates must satisfy the general admissions requirements of the programme,

which are as follows:

  • GSTM Specialist Diploma & Advanced Diploma in Quantity Surveying  (inclusive of free bridging module – Professional Practice Project 2 

Other qualification may apply subjected to Birmingham City University approval such as :

  • Pearson BTEC Level 5 in relevant field
  • Other equivalent qualification from recognized institutions
  • Minimum requirement for English Language GCE C6 or IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL equivalent
