About this Course
The programme aims to produce graduates who can:
• Apply key mechanical engineering concepts and design skills in the modern engineering environment.
• Innovate and be creative in the design of new mechanical products, devices or components.
• Conduct experimental work and generate appropriate data to evaluate concepts and deepen understanding.
• Draw upon a broad knowledge of engineering business practice and integrate design in a business context.
It is anticipated that students graduating from this programme will be able to take up a range of engineering roles and make immediate and valuable contributions to engineering businesses.
Module Descriptions
Mechanical Engineering Design
This module focuses on the engineering design and detailed analytical skills required to design reliable machines through a systematic approach to engineering design encompassing the generic engineering design process, design methodology and components design.
Learning is achieved primarily through directed design exercises and case studies with a supporting programme
of lectures.
Design for “X”
This module aims to make use of the knowledge and analytical skills developed during previous study to specify, design and manufacture products. This module will introduce and develop the advanced techniques of Design for “X” where “X” refers to materials, manufacture, assembly, environment, sustainability, economy, robust design intellectual property rights and design of experiments.
This module in addition investigates corrosion and degradation of engineering materials under mechanical and environmental stress. Consideration is given to design with ductile/brittle materials and failure by the mechanisms of creep and fatigue.
The student will use a range of analytical techniques and systems to make performance predictions, to support theoretical considerations of the systems design process.
Digital Product Design and Analysis
The module is focused on an industrially relevant product development project which has individual and group based elements. This is intended to allow students to experience and demonstrate their depth of understanding of the design, analysis and manufacturing processes and to reflect on modern product development practices.
This module aims to make use of the knowledge and analytical skills developed throughout the student’s
studies to design and manufacture engineered products using Digital 3D Design, Manufacturing and Analysis systems.
The student will use a range of industrial design and analytical techniques and systems to make performance predictions, to support theoretical considerations of a systemic design process.
Project Management & Professional Development
The module will enable students to develop a strong appreciation of the key issues associated with the discipline of project management, in terms of their ability to critically analysis, evaluation and reflect on material from relevant sources and their own professional development.
Students will acquire knowledge of a range of techniques to assist in the project management field. The module will provide opportunities for development of practical skills using an appropriate PC-based project management tool. This knowledge and academic skills development will be set in the context of developing awareness of additional professional skills to complement the core techniques associated within a project management setting.
Design Engineering Project
The student will be provided with a range of predefined project titles and specifications, in the appropriate technological area. The project specifications will follow a structured pattern such that all project students will be able to complete a set of common milestone objectives at set points during the year, as part of the execution of the project.
The student will produce a planning/progress report at the end of semester 1, in addition to a final project report at the end of semester 2. Each individual student will be required to give a presentation on the project to the supervisor(s) and peers.
