Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) Electronic Design Engineering (Top-up)

About this Course

The programme aims to produce graduates who can:

• Apply key electronic engineering concepts and design skills in the modern engineering environment.

• Innovate and be creative in the design of new electronic products, devices or components.

• Conduct experimental work and generate appropriate data to evaluate concepts and deepen understanding.

• Draw upon a broad knowledge of engineering business practice and integrate design in a business context.

• Demonstrate an understanding and apply the competencies required to create and operate a business.

It is anticipated that students graduating from this programme will be able to take up a range of engineering roles and make immediate and valuable contributions to engineering businesses.

Module Descriptions

Project Management & Professional Development

The module will enable students to develop a strong appreciation of the key issues associated with the discipline of project management, the requirements expected from a student at level 6, in terms of their ability to critically analysis, evaluation and reflect on material from relevant sources and their own professional development. Students will acquire knowledge of a range of techniques to assist in the project management field and in their academic study at level 6. The module will provide opportunities for development of practical skills using an appropriate PC based project management tool. This knowledge and academic skills development will be set in the context of developing awareness of additional professional skills to complement the core techniques associated within a project management setting.

Microcontrollers in Embedded Systems

This module aims to develop the application of microcontrollers in embedded systems. A number of commercially available microcontrollers are considered in terms of hardware and software capabilities. An appropriate IDE (Integrated Development Environment) will be used to design, develop, simulate, build and test a complete embedded system to a given specification.

The module will be delivered by a series of lectures and workshops. The lectures are to provide essential material whilst the workshops initially allow the students to gain experience in using the IDE, and thereafter to tackle the group assignment.

Electronic Systems Design

This module demonstrates the design of Finite State Machines (FSMs) and also makes use of a Hardware Descriptive Language in the design of digital systems. During the design process works the module provides incrementally challenging problems. Computer Aided Design (CAD) Tools are used extensively within the module for example OrCAD or Mentor Graphics, to design and test digital FSM structures.

Principles of Wireless Mobile Networks

This module is designed to be suitable for a variety of networking professional roles including those wishing to gain a deeper understanding of mobile communications and 802.11 protocols. Additionally, it is suitable for wireless network administrators and support or design staff requiring a greater understanding of the new technologies and applications of modern converged networks and delegates seeking Certified Wireless

Network Associate (or similar) certification.

Following completion of the module, the student will be able to:

1. Describe and explain in detail wireless data communication technology.

2. Design, deploy and test a secure wireless local area network system.

3. Analyse protocol information in a wireless local area network.

4. Perform a pre-deployment critical site survey.

Design Engineering Project

The student will be provided with a range of predefined project titles and specifications, in the appropriate technological area, at the start of semester 1 of the session.

The project specifications will follow a structured pattern such that all project students will be able to complete a set of common milestone objectives at set points during the year, as part of the execution of the project.

The student will produce a planning/progress report at the end of semester 1, in addition to a final project report at the end of semester 2. Each individual student will be required to give a presentation on the project to the supervisor(s) and peers.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must be of age 18 and above and meet at least one of the following requirements:

  • Relevant diploma from polytechnics in Singapore; or recognised equivalent
